Company History
Since modest beginnings in 1970, Smithco Engineering has always sought to serve its customers with the highest level of skill, professionalism and integrity. Gordon Smith, the founder of Smithco, served his country in the Navy during WWII, went to college on the GI Bill, and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1951 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. A Registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York and Texas, Gordon worked for such companies as IBM, Sperry – Univac, Collins Radio and Honeywell. During his tenure at Collins Radio, the family was transferred from Iowa to Texas. In 1969, Mr. Smith decided to start his own company rather than move the family again. Seeking to combine welding skills acquired as a young man with his engineering background, he founded Smithco in 1970.
In the family tradition, Alan Smith, President of Smithco, graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington with his BS in Electrical Engineering, joining the firm in 1972. Alan is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and his responsibilities include sales and engineering.
Scott Smith, Secretary – Treasurer, graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a MS in Accounting and Information Management, as well as Southern Methodist University in Dallas, with a BA in Education. Scott joined the firm full-time in 1977 and manages the financial, accounting, office and planning issues for the firm.
Mark Martin joined Smithco as a service technician in 1989, and worked his way up through the organization. Mark’s responsibilities include sales and estimating.
Starting as a residential HVAC service company, Smithco rapidly expanded operations to include commercial service, maintenance and replacement work, as well as new commercial construction. HVAC commercial applications include Office - Warehouse facilities, Computer-Room cooling systems and Office Buildings. Clients include Developers, General Contractors and Architects all over Texas. HVAC systems have been designed and successfully installed for Blockbuster Entertainment Distribution Center in McKinney, TX (over 1 million square feet), Aetna Insurance, Bank of America, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Dow Chemical and many other commercial and industrial customers. |
